Esta sí que no te la veías venir… 😉 Porque, si no estás al tanto del mundo académico que rodea al tango y al lunfardo, es muy probable que no conozcas a la gran Otilia Da Veiga: escritora, poeta, letrista y ensayista.
Otilia es una profunda estudiosa del lunfardo, ese repertorio léxico popular y urbano que surgió en el Río de la Plata hacia fines del siglo XIX, al calor de la inmigración. Más que un idioma, es un conjunto vivo de términos y expresiones que enriquecen y matizan el habla rioplatense.
Nacida en Buenos Aires en 1936, el siglo XXI la encuentra en plena actividad. 💫 Es actualmente presidenta de la Junta de Estudios Históricos de San Cristóbal —su barrio de origen— y fue presidenta de la Academia Porteña del Lunfardo, siendo la primera mujer en ocupar ese rol.
En esta charla íntima, Otilia desborda calidez y nos ilumina sobre el verdadero significado de muchos términos lunfardos que escuchamos a diario en tangos y milongas. Una verdadera perla. ✨

This one you probably didn’t see coming… 😉 Because if you’re not familiar with the academic world surrounding tango and lunfardo, chances are you haven’t heard of the remarkable Otilia Da Veiga: writer, poet, lyricist, and essayist.
Otilia is a dedicated scholar of lunfardo, that popular and urban lexical repertoire that emerged in the Río de la Plata region toward the end of the 19th century (1870–1880), shaped by waves of immigration. More than a language, it’s a living set of terms and expressions that enrich and nuance everyday speech in the region.
Born in Buenos Aires in 1936, she remains fully active well into the 21st century. 💫 She is currently the president of the Junta de Estudios Históricos de San Cristóbal—her neighborhood of origin—and previously served as president of the Academia Porteña del Lunfardo, becoming the first woman to hold that position.
In this intimate conversation, Otilia radiates warmth and sheds light on the true meaning of many lunfardo terms we often hear in tangos and milongas. A true gem. ✨
